LESSON PLAN #1

UNIT: Curling
GRADE:9/10
LESSON:#1
TOPIC: Curling Delivery and Sweeping
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Stance, Body Postion, and Ready Position
EQUIPMENT:
-40 yellow pylons
-bean bags
-pinneys
-tennis balls

LESSON CONTENT                          TEACHING POINTS & ORGANIZATION

Introductory Activities/Warm-Up(8 min)
Tag:One person is the ‘tagger’ who tries to grab a blind fold from the other students.  In order to remain untouchable, the students can assume the curling stance for 5 seconds and then they must return to play.   Once you have lost your blind fold then you become a “tagger”.
Command Style

Curling Stance: down low, feet are staggered with your hack foot behind your slide foot, right arm is extended infront of you(in the direction that you want the rock to go in)

4 pylons to mark the boundary

Skill Develpment-Concept(20 min)

Ready Position and Body Movement Demo

Bowling into Feet:

  •  Throw the bean bag into your partners feet using the correct curling delivery (stance, backswing, and forward glide)

Bowling into Feet:
  • Command and Reciprocal
  • 1 bean bag between two people
  • wide open gym area
  • number off into either one's or two's
  • all pairs need a wide open space in the gym
  • pairs stand 5 meters apart with ankles together, toes pointing outwards
Cues:
  • Stance: staggered stance, weight is evenly distributed on right and left feet
  • Backswing: hand that holds rock is extended out straight, weight transfer onto hack foot, slide foot moves back

  • forward slide: eyes looking straight ahead, weight shifted to slide leg, hack leg extends
Culminating Activity(15 min)

Aiming for Points:

To understand the skills for aiming and force control

  • in groups of 10 (students stay in order throughout whole game)
  • 3 stations with tape on the wall(the tape runs vertical)
  • each piece of tape represents a different point(ie center tape is 5 points, tape on either side of center is 3 points, tape on the far right side and left side is 2 points.)
  • try to hit the tape with a bean bag
  • a marker is layed out to represent the hack(students must throw from there)
  • whoever gets up to fifteen points, gets to move to the fourth station
  • the fourth station has markings on the floor
  • these markings also have points assiciated with them(these line go accross the throwing surface)

Teaching Cues:
  • thowing arm rock, and body in line with shot path or imaginary line(square to body)

  • take note of the feel of how much push off was used for each throw, how high the hips were elevated and how far the slide foot moved backwards
Extension: use different throwing objects such as tennis balls or scooter boards

Closure(5min)

                                                                LESSON PLAN #2

UNIT: Curling
GRADE:9/10
LESSON:#2
TOPIC: Balanced Delivery
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Basic concepts of balanced delivery

EQUIPMENT:
-40 yellow pylons      -1 house
-bean bags
-8 hockey sticks

LESSON CONTENT                          TEACHING POINTS & ORGANIZATION

Introductory Activities/Warm-Up(8 min)

Underarm Bean Bag Toss:

  • to toss the bean bag to one another when the teacher yells "toss."
  • students must catch the bean bag with two hands, lower onto one knee, and then proceed to toss the bean bag underarm.
  • as the students initiate toss from one knee, they will have to push off with back leg and lunge forward, resembling the curling delivery.
  • after successful completions, the students may choose to increase distance between them.

  • Command and Practice
  • gradually lower the body onto knee, there is not time limit.
  • push off with back leg to produce enough distance for toss.
  • utilize a wind-up for underarm toss.
  • lunge forward to complete force production.
  • recognize weight transfer from push off foot to lunging foot.
Skill Develpment-Concept(20 min)

Bowling to Target:
Implement teaching style(Self Check)-hand out criteria sheets-each group of two will shoot for their own pylon-the plyons will be at 5m, 10m, 15m-the student progresses to the new distance by hitting within one foot of the pylon 2 times-alternating shots between the pair

Curl Ship:

  • two students start in the middle (rocks)
  • rest of students start in throwers safety zone
  • half way through teacher calls out a safety zone and students must run to that area without being tagged
  • if tagged a student becomes part of the rock team
  • in order to avoid a tag a student may crouch into a curl delivery position a progression to lateral movement may be made half way through warm-up
Bowling to Target:
  • Curling Delivery:  slide foot moves back, weight transfer to hack foot, forward slide, weight transfers to slide leg, hack leg extends, eyes are always forward.
*See teaching cues on the criteria sheets
Self Check: -answer questions, initiate communication with the learner(open)

Curl Ship:

  • Practice
  • run to open space
  • when going into safety position bend knee and take weight onto front left foot (right handed thrower)
  • be careful running into safety zones, watch out for others
Culminating Activity(15 min)

Aiming Along Shot Path:

  • The objective of the game is to hit all three of cones by following the shot path
  • To consistently aim for target along the shot path

  •

Aiming Along Shot Path:
  • In groups of 2
  • Each group gets 3 cones, 1 piece of string, and 1 piece of tape
  • Set Up: 'Hack' is marked by piece of tape. The string is attached at the hack.  Three cones are place at diffent distances from the hack.
  • One person is the thrower, the other person decides the direction of the throw by pulling the string to either cone one, two, or three.
  • The thrower then attempts to deliver the scooter board directly to the cone.
  • change roles
Cues:
  • Throwing arm, scooter board, and body in line with shot path or imaginary line
  • square to target
  • eyes and head focused on targetPractice-Transfer skill cues from Criteria Sheets to a games setting
Closure(5min)
-Ask questions
What is the best way to complete a balanced delivery??
